These photos are from the trip that Joan, Nico and Wolf took to Perú in July 2006. We wanted to visit Perú so that Nico could see his country of birth and to visit his birth family whom we had managed to contact a few years ago (thanks to a Google search). Also Perú is a very interesting country which we had not visited for 15 years.
We used Lima as our base and then did three excursions of about a week each to:
  • Huaraz and the Cordillera Blanca
  • Puno, Cusco, Machu Picchu
  • Jungle on the Amazon River downstream from Iquitos
The sequence starts with images of
  • Peruvian life, customs, icons
then it roughly follows the order of our trip:
  • Lima and area
  • Huaraz and the Codillera Blanca
  • Puno, Cusco, Machu Picchu
  • Amazonian jungle and Nico's birth family

Huaraz

Huaraz city

Huaraz is situated in the Rio Santa valley north of Lima and between the Cordillera Negra to the west and the Cordillera Blanca to the east. Many of the peaks in the Cordillera Blanca are glacier covered. Mt. Huascaran is the highest peak in the range. At 6768m (22205 ft) it is the highest mountain in the tropics, highest mountain in Perú, and fourth highest mountain in South America, fourth highest mountain in the Americas. Only the Himalayas are higher than the Andes mountains. There are many mountains over 6000m in the Cordillera Blanca.

It seems everywhere Christians destroyed Inca temples and build churches on the foundations. Chinceros is one particularly egregious example. Machu Picchu avoided this fate as the conquistadors were unaware of its existence.

The Jungle

We flew from Lima to Iquitos, and then went by boats down the Amazon River for about 80 km to Explorama Lodge near Yanamono which is close to the confluence of the Napo River with the Amazon. Nico's birth family lives in Yanamono "1". Although the river is still more than 3600 km from the ocean it is already huge - like a moving lake. We stayed at the Explorama Lodge, had our own guide and were spoiled there.

Impressions of the jungle: expectations versus reality. The trees were not as high as we had expected, nor was the understory very dark. In fact some forests on the West Coast of Canada seem higher and much gloomier at ground level. The mosquitoes were hardly as bothersome as many places in Canada. The variety of all kinds of life from trees to insects was much more than we expected. It rained much less than we expected, but nevertheless it is a very damp place - forget trying to dry your laundry. Overall it is a very interesting place.

Cocao is native to Perú although now it is grown mostly in Africa and elsewhere. The pod has a delicious edible white flesh. However, chocolate is made by taking the purple seeds and fermenting them.

Butterflies and moths

We saw so many butterflies but do not know the names of very many of them. Even very similar looking butterflies can be from different species. Taking pictures of the big blue morpho butterflies was a hopeless cause.

Napo River and the Canopy walk

This outing was to the ExplorNapo lodge where we did the Canopy walk. The walk is 500m long on suspended bridges between trees, reaching a height of 37m at the highest tree.

Nico"s birth family

When we adopted Nico we just met his birth mother, Isabel, and knew he had an older brother Freddie. A few years ago we were surprised to find out there is a much bigger family including husband Antonio, a younger sister Kati and two younger brothers Toribio and Gaston.

Peru from the air

Cold oceans on the coast in the winter (May - September) generate fogs called neblina which blank the coast continually. Without neblina there would be no precipitation.
