Welcome to Globalization Studies.
In July of 2002 the University of Lethbridge established
a Coordinatorship of Globalization Studies
(GS). The goal is to establish a fully accredited interdisplinary
program in the field. We emphasize innovative uses of the world wide
web as a means of advancing inclusiveness and democratization in the
complex of processes that go by the name of globalization. So far GS
has developed two interdisplinary courses. Videos of the lectures are
available on this site. The courses are:
The GS program is coordinated and instructed by Dr.
Anthony Hall. GS courses are broadcast live most Wednesday nights
6:00 p.m. - 8:50 p.m. MST throughout the semesters. Viewers are
encouraged to participate interactively through the internet
chat.

February 28, 2004 - This site will officially continue under the URL www.globalizationstudies.ca. It will focus primarily on text based articles, relating especially to indigenous views of globalization.

humanity of the colonizers. It will prove that even the "mightiest powers
on earth" have enough intelligence to decide to live according to law. It

Native Protestors Clash with Resort Developers
Sun Peaks, Court Orders Injunction Against Protest
The Supreme Court of British Columbia banned Aboriginal political presence at SunPeaks in an interlocutory injunction on September 3, 2004. The interlocutory injunction prohibits the Skwelkwek'welt Protection Center from having a camp at SunPeaks to monitor the destruction and sale of their land. People who are at the camp now could be arrested at any time. This decision
completely ignores or recognizes any value to our Secwepemc indigenous economy.

Major Assignment for IDST 2850, Globalization Since 1492
Write an essay of 2,400 to 3,000 words on one of the topics listed below. Base you research in whole or in part on one or more of the course texts, namely Hall’s The American Empire and the Fourth World, Galeano’s Open Veins of Latin America, and Sklair’s Globalization.You are not restricted to the course texts. You may submit a progress report for written comments by the professor on October 20 (i.e. Its optional). No grade will be assigned in the professor’s reply. The purpose is to provide the students with helpful suggestion on issues of interpretation, possible sources, etc.. The essay is due on November 24. No substitute topics will be accepted

Symposium on Disinformation Opens
Combating
Disinformation Fundamental to Progress of Humanity
The International Symposium on Media
and Disinformation opened in Halifax July 1, to analyse
and discuss the problem of disinformation, its significance
and how to contend with it. Participants had been welcomed
the evening before in true Nova Scotian style, with bagpipes,
songs in Gaelic, welcoming chants from the Mi'kmaq and
a meal provided by the Muslim Student Association. Remarks
from the Symposium’s organizers captured the concern
of all by emphasizing that the work being taken up on
disinformation is a defining issue, fundamental to the
progress of humanity.

This International Symposium aims
to deal with one of the most pressing matters facing
journalists, media and culture workers, and all sections
of the people -- disinformation. The main aim of the
Symposium is to empower journalists and collectives
of the people by definitively exposing the modus operandi
and extent of disinformation, presenting the experience
of journalists and activists across Canada and abroad
in tackling it, and to consolidate the long-term struggle
for its elimination.

their behind-the-scenes operations during the Battle
of Gustafsen Lake, the most aggressive police and
military operation within Canada in the twentieth
century. In referring to this Indian war in British
Columbia in 1995, American Judge Janice Stewart,
who viewed Above
The Law, Part 2 as
part of the court proceedings in the extradition case
of USA versus Pitawanakwat, made reference to "uncontradicted evidence that
the Canadian government engaged in a smear and disinformation
campaign to prevent the media from learning and
publicizing to true extent and political nature
of the events." She also referred "the
occupation by the government of Canada" of
the First Nations' "sacred and unceded tibal
land in British Columbia." |
