DAC is made up of students, academic staff, alumni, and staff. We formed in April 2005 and have been working diligently since to raise university awareness of the need for a permanent, flexible on-campus daycare. Everyone in the university and surrounding community will benefit from on-campus daycare.
Moreover, an on-campus daycare will manifest the University’s commitment to equity, diversity, and well being of the university community.
As stated above the Students Union formed DAC in 2005 understanding that an on-campus daycare would facilitate and diversify student access to post-secondary education.
May 1 - August 31, 2005 with a grant provided by LPIRG, DAC hired two students (under the guidance of two anthropology professors) to do extensive qualitative and quantitative research. This research demonstrated that there is no doubt that students, needed and support on-campus daycare. Even students who did not have children recognized the social value of an on-campus daycare facility; in fact most were shocked to learn there was not a daycare on campus.
The research reported (which can be accessed on this website) that there was a demonstrated need and support for on-campus childcare at the University of Lethbridge.
From 1138 respondents: 1034, or 90.90% were in favor of on-campus childcare. Over 100 people stated that if on-campus childcare were available they would access it. The majority of respondents said that on-campus daycare would have a positive impact on the perception of the University of Lethbridge
“I would see the University of Lethbridge as a more responsible, compassionate university, not to mention a university that is concerned with providing a quality working environment for employee/students” (qualitative survey respondent). |
