"Origin of man proved – Metaphysics must flourish – He who understands baboon would do more toward metaphysics than Locke."
[Charles Darwin 1838]

My research is on the evolution of social behavior, vocal communication and cognition. Current projects focus on humans, baboons in southern Africa, and various small mammal and bird species. It is supported by grants from the Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council of Canada, the L.S.B. Leakey Foundation for Research into Human Origins, and the National Institute of Mental Health (U.S.A.).
