Bridges To Science
The Bridges to Science program at the University of Lethbridge is an outreach program dedicated to providing hands-on science activities in elementary and high schools and on campus. The program has been in development since Fall 2009 and will be field-tested in local high schools and then further refined during the 2010-2011 school year. Run by volunteer graduate students, the aim of the program is to promote scientific literacy in young Canadians.
Bridges to Science is partnered with Let's
Talk Science, an award-winning, national, charitable organization that delivers science learning programs and services for children.
The approach of Let's Talk Science is to engage children and youth -- from the very early years through high school --with fun, exciting hands-on/minds-on activities that improve their understanding of physical and life sciences, mathematics and technology. This approach builds critical life skills, including problem-solving, communication and teamwork, and accounts for the fact that each individual learns in their own unique way.
In addition to our youth-oriented programming, the Let's Talk Science program provides university and college students, educators and professionals in the fields of science, engineering and technology with outreach training opportunities that allow them to participate in science outreach with youth. This training is delivered by a skilled facilitator through Science with Impact workshops. The first such training event
was held October 26th, 2010.
Bridges to Science is also partnered with LUMACS,
the Math and Computer Science outreach program run by the University of Lethbridge.
The Bridges to Science program is always looking for volunteers who are willing to donate their time to making this program a success in Lethbridge schools. If you are interested in volunteering, please contact Evelina (evelina.delaurentiis@uleth.ca) for more information.
