Mathematical Physics Abstract: An operational form for the kernel for a mapping between an operator acting in a Hilbert space of a quantum system with $\mathfrak{SU}(n)$ symmetry group and its symbol in the corresponding classical phase space is proposed. For symmetric irreps of $\mathfrak{SU}(n)$, this mapping is bijective. We briefly discuss complications that will occur in the general case. Physics (Theory) Education Abstract: For many physics calculations and simulations using multiple computers (clustered computing) is required. I will discuss how to turn a lab of idle computers or a handful of commodity PCs into your own personal computer clustering environment in minutes using a free software solution (PelicanHPC) which requires no installation on any machine. Improvements that I have added to the project that will be available in its next release will be showcased. Do you plan to participate in the excursion to Waterton National Park, Tuesday 24 August? Subatomic Physics Abstract: In QCD sum-rules, composite local operators are used to define currents that couple to the hadronic states that one wishes to probe. However, composite operators of the same mass dimension and quantum numbers generally mix under renormalization. I will present an overview of a QCD sum-rules study of mixing between quark mesons and scalar gluonium [1], emphasizing the importance of mixing between the mesonic and gluonic composite operators under renormalization. I will show that the well known pseudoscalar quark meson calculation can be used to check the composite operator renormalization methodology used in the scalar quark meson and scalar gluonium mixing calculation. I will then give an overview of the perturbative and non-perturbative contributions to the operator-product expansion in the mixing calculation, paying particular attention to operator mixing in each case. The physical implications of these results for mixing between scalar quark mesons and scalar gluonium will be briefly discussed. Classical/Quantum Gravity & Cosmology Abstract: Our observations with the Canadian MOST space telescope provide very strong constraints on the mass of the compact object in the High Mass X-ray Binary (HMXB) system LS 5039. The minimum mass implied by our observations is 3 solar masses, with the likelihood of the mass being considerably higher, which makes the compact object the second known HMXB black hole candidate in the Galaxy after Cygnus X-1. The discovery of a second HMXB black hole means that the rate of formation of such black holes is considerably higher than previously thought given that the lifetime of an HMXB system is measured in tens of millions of years.
